Highly overweight people are leaving their annual physicals with the order to lose a significant amount of weight. Whether this weight is lost naturally, or as a result of an elective procedure, the weight loss almost always leaves behind some unattractive sagging skin.

Weight loss of 100 pounds or more can be merely the first step in an obese person's transformation. People who have undergone gastric bypass surgery, lap band surgery, or who have lost the weight through significant exercise and diet changes, have achieved something very important, and deserve to see an attractive shape when they stand in front of the mirror.

It is important to wait to tighten up that sagging skin until after your weight loss has stabilized, a process that takes about 18 months after the weight-loss surgery, depending on how much the patient weighed before the operation, and how much weight has been loss. Performing this surgery too early can lead to skin that is not sufficiently tight, and may require further cosmetic procedures later.

Patients who have lost such significant amounts of weight are not always aware that body contouring surgery can have ramifications for the whole body. Surgeons may need to approach the whole body, rather than just in one or two specific parts of the body, which is often the case with cosmetic surgery for patients within a more normal weight range.

Common areas of sagging for patients who lose 100 pounds or more in a relatively short time include the back, thighs, abdomen, arms, breasts, face, and neck.

Body contouring is one type of cosmetic surgery that can significantly improve the shape of the body, but it cannot improve the quality of the skin. It is important to have realistic expectations from body contouring, especially after significant weight loss. The skin tissue will still be supple over time, but not like it was before the initial weight gain.

There is a wide variety of options in cosmetic surgery, and it is often necessary to perform more than one to achieve the full effect for a person who has lost over 100 pounds. The surgery should be custom-designed to fit your wants and needs. Here is a list of some common surgeries connected with weight loss and related skin-tightening procedures:

Tummy Tuck - The tummy tuck is an operation designed to remove extra skin and fat from your abdominal area. It should also tighten the muscles along your abdominal wall. You will see almost immediate results; on your way out of the operating room, you should be able to perceive a tighter, firmer stomach.

Upper Arm Lift - The upper arm lift eradicates unwanted skin and fat from the arm, eliminating unsightly flabbiness. You will come away from this procedure with a firmer, younger skin tone that is closer to the rest of your body than the flabby arm had been.

Thigh Lift - Incisions or liposuction are used to take away excess skin and fat from the thighs. This will take the "orange peel" look away from your legs and will help you to have tighter buttocks and thighs over time.

Full Body Lift - This is the most thorough, and the most popular, post-weight loss cosmetic surgery. Excess skin and fat are removed from all over the body, including the hips, buttocks, belly, back, and outer thighs, and can offer lifelong dramatic results for the disciplined patient. Significant weight loss comes at a cost. Whether you paid in money or in sweat for your weight loss, there is no reason why you should not now have the body you deserve.

Plastic Surgery - Do You Need It

Very close to 11.9 million underwent cosmetic, both surgical and non surgical, procedures last year. The figure stands at 1,425,900 for the top 5 surgical procedures. Even the trend lines show that there has been a continuous growth in the plastic surgeries performed in the last 7-8 years. The figure stands at over 8 million for all plastic surgeries put together.

Why Is Plastic Surgery Gaining Popularity A brief look into what plastic surgery can do, should explain its popularity. Principally, there are two classes of plastic surgeries.

1. Reconstructive surgery, which helps cover-up destructive effects of diseases and accidents in addition to traumas, surgeries etc include tissue transplantation like bone, muscle and skin. Common of these types of surgeries are breast reconstruction, contracture surgery for burn injuries, cleft surgery on lip and palate. To give you an idea, breast reduction and lip reconstruction costs you between $1,700 and $5,500.

2. Cosmetic surgery, whose popularity as depicted by the 11.9 million people, is a major route for personal enhancement. As the name suggests, the procedure aims to enhance the cosmetic appearance. Top cosmetic surgeries in demand are mammaplasty or breast augmentation which is different from mastopexy which is breast lifiting. Other most popular cosmetic surgeries in the list are tummy tuck, buttock augmentation, liposuction, rhinoplasty (nose job) etc.

Are Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery the Same? Any doctor is legally allowed to do a cosmetic surgery but not plastic surgery. Critics are up in demands that the two be legally distinguished as cosmetic surgery is not recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. It is true that those who have not undergone the statutory 5-7 years of residency training or more in surgery are reinventing themselves as 'cosmetic surgeons', looking at the lucrative market.

Historical Evolution of Plastic Surgery American Society of Plastic Surgeons cites evidences to indicate ancient Indian surgeons' exploitation in the field at around 800 BC. It was around 19th century that it evolved to its present form. First American plastic surgeon was Dr. John Peter Mettauer who performed cleft palate operation in 1827. World War I had catapulted plastic surgery into a new realm.

The word plastic in plastic surgery may confuse a bit while it doesn't use it at all. It is derived from the Greek word 'plastikos' which means molding to give shape. Now you know why the terms plastic and cosmetic surgeries are used interchangeably

Cosmetic surgery loans - For that natural beauty

Appearance plays a major role today in the success or failure of people in their professional lives. Assume that you are going to buy a used car and the car looks very dirty. Would you like to pay more for it? I think the answer would be no. Cosmetic surgery helps in making your looks better to get you better opportunities. There are multiple reasons why a particular person may need a cosmetic surgery. While some people might be having some kind of birth defects others might be having a worn out look because of aging. All these can be corrected through cosmetic surgery. Cosmetic surgery or plastic surgery is a modern surgical process which involves the repair of body tissue so as to improve the physical appearance.

Given their value addition to a particular person's life in general and career in particular cosmetic surgeries come with a charge that sometimes makes people postpone the investment. People often wait till they have enough money and continue to be low on confidence and self-esteem. What if you could finance your cosmetic surgery now and take the advantage of it for a longer period.

Cosmetic surgery loans enable you to do just that. Cosmetic surgery loans have made the surgeries accessible to people who may not have enough money now but are expecting it in future. So it is no longer needed to postpone the cosmetic procedure due to insufficient funds. Cosmetic surgery is all about how you look at yourself. It makes you feel more confident about yourself. The associated loans have given a chance to many people to go for these surgeries who otherwise would never have been able to afford it.

The popular cosmetic surgeries include breast surgery, breast augmentation, dentistry, liposuction, tattoo removal, breast lift, laser hair removal, wrinkle removal, reconstructive surgery, etc.

How to go about it?

You can start by looking for a trustworthy prospective surgeon. Your choice of surgeon should be more on the basis of professional qualification and experience and less on the basis of the fees charged. There are some companies offering cosmetic surgery loans who may allow you to choose a surgeon on your own or give you options. You should finalise what you are going to do. Next you should consult for the procedure you want to undergo. Find alternative procedures and weigh them in terms of price and its effectiveness.

The consultation would help you in knowing your loan amount. Include the post operative medication and consultation costs in the loan. After that you may approach a finance company for the cosmetic surgery loan.

About cosmetic surgery loans

The cosmetic surgery loans provide funds to the tune of £25,000. The interest rate charged on them is usually lower than the major credit cards. Interest rate can be as low as 9.9% for these loans. Your credit profile plays a major deciding role in getting you a good rate. Ensure that you make payments in time without any defaults for getting a good interest rate. The loan term for the cosmetic surgery loans is in the range of 2 to 5 years.

It is a common observation that there is no down payment or pre payment penalty associated with these loans. Cosmetic surgery loans can be of two types- secured and unsecured. The secured loans will demand some property as collateral. The unsecured loan will involve a strict credit check and verification of your financial condition. The insurance companies do not insure plastic surgery unless it is done purely for medical reasons like restoring some functional aspect of the body. So keep that in mind and consult your surgeon regarding the same

Cosmetic Surgery Abroad - Making the Right Choice

The past few years have seen a dramatic change in the public perception of cosmetic surgery in Britain, leading to a sixty five per cent increase in demand in 2004 alone. In fact, so popular has cosmetic surgery become that it is hard to turn on the television or open a magazine without encountering stories of lives transformed as a result of work being done. Vastly improved treatments and increased social acceptance has lead to cosmetic surgery becoming a normalised practice, as viable and realistic to the housewife as it is to the Hollywood star. None of which is surprising, considering the very real and immediate benefits cosmetic surgery can bring to the patient's appearance and self-esteem.

However, cosmetic surgery can still be beyond the budget of many, which is why there is a growing trend for people to travel to parts of the world where the standard of expertise and post-operation care is just as good as in the United Kingdom, but up to sixty percent cheaper. Such savings are made due to favorable exchange rates This is particularly significant when you consider that medical health insurance doesn't cover the cost of elective cosmetic surgery. So now patients are choosing to enjoy holidays to exotic destinations such as Malaysia and Thailand in addition to improving their appearance.

No country is more suited to this combination than Brazil, land of sun and sea and the body beautiful, and second only to the United States in terms of the number of surgical operations performed every year. The 3500 plus members of the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery are renowned for their experience and expertise, which makes sense when you consider that 80% of all plastic surgery in the United Kingdom is reconstructive, whereas 80% of all plastic surgery in Brazil is cosmetic, and that cosmetic surgery magazines clutter up the shelves in newsagents the same way that computer and golf magazines do here. The level of service in the Brazilian private health sector is extremely high, to mention all of those wonderful beaches you can strut your stuff down after you've made a full recovery!

Of course, another benefit of having cosmetic surgery abroad is that it guarantees total privacy, so that you won't need to worry about friends, neighbours and work colleagues seeing you in the immediate aftermath of the operation. You can recover in a relaxed environment, choose who you want to see and have all manner of complementary therapies and additional work done while you're at it. In order to make the most of your stay in the country and feel confident you've hired a surgeon with the sufficient level of expertise to carry out the work, it is advisable to engage the services of a cosmetic surgery company who regularly deals with sending clients from the United Kingdom to Brazil, or your country of choice. This will also insure that you are given the appropriate level of follow-up care, including careful monitoring in the days immediately following surgery. Not only will this give you piece of mind, but it will save you money as the company uses contacts that have been built up in the country over a number of years.

Regardless of this, it is worth understanding that all types of surgery carry a degree of risk and that surgical results differ from person to person and depend on many factors, including the patient's age, medical history and health, and that results may be slightly different from those that you were expecting. As such, it is a good indication of the responsibility and professionalism of the surgeon that such things are discussed in detail before any operation takes place and you are aware of any complications or side effects that may occur, no matter how rare. Also, that the surgeon is available to discuss and treat side effects or complications as and when they arise. If such things are not immediately offered it is advisable to consider this a warning sign and start looking for a different surgeon. After all, you can take as long as you want selecting a surgeon you feel comfortable with, but you will be living with the results for the rest of your life

Lasik Surgery - What Exactly Is It

There are a number of methods used to surgically correct eyesight nowadays but the most popular choice is Lasik (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis). However before the use of modern technology such as laser beams and computers, the original technique was Radial Keratotomy (RK). This involved an Ophthalmic surgeon with a steady hand and a sharp scalpel to make a series of radial cuts in the cornea (the front 'window' of the eye), which when healed, would flatten and therefore reshape the cornea. This would theoretically correct short sightedness. The problems occurred mainly due to the fact that the depth of the incisions could cause weakening and progressive flattening of the cornea, after the procedure. This could lead to a number of defects such as progressively blurring vision and starburst patterns around lights.

With the advent of the laser, a more modern method became the norm, called Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK). This procedure involved the removal of the outer cells of the cornea (epithelium), and then reshaping the corneal surface with an excimer laser, a procedure known as ablation. The epithelial cells were then allowed to grow back normally. Because epithelial cells on the eye regenerate exceptionally quickly the cornea would generally heal completely within a few days. This technique was certainly more successful than RK but did have its own complications. Side effects such as halos round lights and reduced contrast vision were experienced by almost everyone, along with some corneal 'hazing'. Although serious complications were rare there was always the risk of infection due to the lack of epithelium protection during the healing phase.

Then in 1990 LASIK surgery was developed by a Dr.Lucio Buratto of Italy and Dr. Ioannis Pallikaris of Greece, and it quickly became popular because of fewer complications and was certainly more accurate. The procedure involves cutting a corneal 'flap' with a special high precision blade called a microkeratome. This flap was then folded back with the front surface epithelium still intact. The cornea can then be reshaped with the laser and the flap is laid back down. The epithelial cells that were cut with the microkeratome quickly heal and therefore the outer surface is a nice continuous layer that securely holds the flap in place permanently. Although quite uncommon, some complications such as dry eyes, debris under the flap, ghosting or poor vision to name a few, do occur from time to time.

Another technique that is also used nowadays is LASEK or Laser-Assisted Sub-Epithelial Keratectomy (as opposed to LASIK). It can be used if the cornea is too thin to undergo lasik surgery where the microkeratome cuts deeper than the epithelium. In LASEK, the epithelium is peeled off as a layer to allow laser ablation underneath. During the procedure the epithelial layer is preserved with a special chemical solution and then replaced afterwards, so as to allow natural healing. There is generally more pain and slower visual recovery with this technique.

PRK and LASEK allow the epithelial layer to heal entirely and therefore don't run the risks of a dislocated corneal flap which can occur due to trauma, even after many years with LASIK. However, the latter is still the most commonly used procedure.

There is still a lot of fear amongst many about the long term effects of laser surgery, but it has been around for quite a while now in its different forms. It seems that more and more people are opting for this surgery, due to a number of reasons whether they be for convenience or cosmetic. With the information technology of the internet, increased knowledge on the subject is much more widespread, so barring any major negative eventualities this trend will almost certainly continue

Plastic surgery is the specialty dedicated to improving or restoring the appearance and/or function of numerous areas of the body. Norman Waterhouse is a leading surgeon in London, UK, known for aesthetic facial plastic surgery, Botox cosmetic treatment, midface lift, breast lift, neck list, breast reduction, etc The aim of breast augmentation or breast implant surgery is to produce full, soft, natural breasts that are in proportion to the rest of the body.

Most women request breast augmentation if they have small breasts or if they have lost breast tissue after pregnancy or breastfeeding. Asymmetry in breast size may also be corrected when the difference is very noticeable. Surgery to increase the size of the women breasts involves the placement of implants either beneath the breast tissue or beneath the muscles of the chest.

The size of the breasts is determined by the individual patient. Breast implants surgery or breast augmentation at Norman Waterhouse in London, UK, is performed under a general anaesthetic and involves an overnight stay in hospital. Recovery from the breast implants surgery or breast augmentation surgery usually takes four weeks before resuming full activity. Modern breast augmentation or breast implants is usually highly successful in achieving a pleasing result.

The problem of hardening of the breast is now very rare due to improvements in implant design. Equally, it is now generally accepted that Silicone provides the best material for women breast implants and does not cause collagen disorders and other problems. Norman Waterhouse is one of the best facial and nose plastic surgeons in London, UK. The frequently requested RHINOPLASTY (Plastic Surgery Nose) procedure can be very successful in improving, refining or reducing the nose. Choosing the right surgeon and clinic can be difficult unless choice is informed by balanced advice. The decision to undergo any type of cosmetic surgery is intensely personal. Although cosmetic surgery will not change your life, it may give you greater self-confidence and add to your sense of well-being. Do not make this decision lightly. It will not solve personal problems or make you look like someone else.

Research the procedure

Read as much as you can about the procedure or treatment you are interested in having. This will help make sure that it is right for you and that you are aware of the pros and cons of treatment. The best way to find a surgeon is word of mouth...through a friend or family member, or perhaps your doctor. Also check out our message boards on different sites to get surgeon recommendations from men and women who undergone the same procedure you're looking for.

Choose the right doctor

Get a referral from your GP - they can make sure that, with your permission, any important information about your medical history is passed to the cosmetic surgeon. It also means that your GP can provide for you if you have any problems or need advice after the procedure. You should be offered an initial consultation with the doctor who will perform the operation/procedure. Do not be afraid to ask the doctor about his/her qualifications and expertise in the procedure you are interested in, how many times they have performed the operation and how often complications occur. Price should not be a deciding factor in which surgeon you choose, and many 'cosmetic' surgeons charge less than plastic surgeons. Be suspicious of special offers you see in newspapers or in magazines as most plastic surgeons charge a similar amount and rarely, if ever, give 'specials'. Prices can vary between surgeon depending on location, experience, where the surgery is performed (hospital vs. private clinic) and implant chosen. If you decide to go to an unqualified surgeon because of the price you could end up spending more money later on revision surgery.

Find out about the clinic or hospital

The best way to choose a clinic or hospital is through your GP. If this is not an option, make an appointment at a few clinics, so that you can compare prices and the services offered.

* There should be registers of all private clinics and hospitals that are registered to provide cosmetic surgery in your country. The latest inspection report can be obtained from the Hospital or Clinic by requesting it.

* All cosmetic surgery clinics and hospitals should be required to provide a memo detailing the services they offer, the cost, as well as information on making comments, complaints or suggestions

Tips on Lasik Eye Surgery

What is Lasik Surgery?: The word LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In Sutu Keratomieusis, a process which reshapes the cornea to refract light in the lens. While LASIK surgery isn't close to perfect, it is a very viable and increasingly safe surgery.

LASIK surgery is a very simple two step process:

A slight, thin flap of tissue is created on the outside layer of the eye or cornea. The flap helps heal and provide comfort on the way to better vision.

The doctor then folds open the flap on the inner cornea to correct the vision. Finally, the flap is closed to its original position and sealed with stitches.

Preparing for LASIK Surgery: When you meet the doctor to discuss LASIK eye surgery you should let him know a few things about yourself. Let the doctor know about any past or present medical and eye conditions as well as all medications you are taking or are allergic to. It is important that you disclose all of this to your doctor before deciding if LASIK is right for you.

After you've disclosed this personal information to the doctor, you should then discuss if you are a good candidate for LASIK surgery. Let him explain to you the risks, benefits, and alternatives of the surgery as well as what you can expect from beginning to end.

You should stop using any lotions, perfumes, or creams the day before the surgery as well as any makeup that may cause debris to get in the eye. The doctor may even request that you scrub and wash out your eyes for a good time before LASIK surgery to prevent the chance of any type of infection.

Finally, you should definitely arrange with a loved one for transportation to and from the LASIK surgery. Before LASIK surgery some doctors will arrange for you to take some medicine to help you relax that could impair your vision and reaction time. After LASIK surgery you may need a few days to recover your vision, hence the need to arrange for a drive home.

The Cost of LASIK: When you are considering different LASIK surgery opportunities you should question your surgeon on what is included in the cost of the LASIK surgery. What is and isn't included in the LASIK cost? What will I be charged for if complications occur or enhancements are needed? What is the cost for LASIK medications such as anti-inflammatory or painkillers? What is the cost for temporary contact lenses if they are needed after LASIK? What is the cost of the follow-up visits related to LASIK?

Finally, you should get in contact with your insurance company to determine if they will cover the cost of the LASIK surgery. Some insurance companies don't cover LASIK cost because they consider the surgery to be cosmetic. If financing is not a problem you should strongly consider using the LASIK surgeon who best suits your needs and concerns.

The FDA considers the average cost of LASIK surgery to be $1,344 in 2005, a significant decrease from the original numbers listed in 2002 of nearly $1,600. Many consider this LASIK cost to be marginal in relation to the comfort created by newly improved vision.

After LASIK Surgery The moments after a major life-altering event are usually filled with joy, laughter, and camaraderie, but this usually doesn't happen after surgery. LASIK surgery is no different than any other surgery, but its drawbacks may be a little different than others.

The results of LASIK surgery are much akin to the results of being pestered by a pet day after day. Instead of the healing of bruises or incisions, LASIK surgery is accompanied by more burning and itching of an area that you are completely unable to scratch or cool. At this point, any touching of the eye could undo everything the surgery just repaired.

Your vision will be blurry because of the watering and tearing up of your eye, but you cannot under any circumstances touch your eye. The eye may appear dry or bloodshot for several days, if this occurs you should consider taking time off of work. If you experience severe pain from LASIK surgery at any time you should contact your surgeon.

Within 24-48 hours after your surgery you should have a post-operative exam to make sure everything is healing well. At regular intervals after the LASIK surgery up to six months you should continue seeing your doctor for checkups.

At the first visit after LASIK surgery your doctor will remove the shield and make sure your eye is responding correctly to the surgery. You will not be able to use contact lenses for sometime to keep from further irritation and you may have to use drops or artificial tears to help with lubricating the eye. But now-a-days the total expenditure of the surgery has turned so reasonable that even the most common men agree to it. Today plastic surgery is no more a big deal, but a requires a qualified surgeon.

Sometimes it has become a necessity for reasons such as unusual birthmarks, accidents or burnings etc. Today because reconstructive surgery can be performed for these cases they feel relieved. Cosmetic surgery has become immensely popular today, as most of the people are turning beauty conscious. Most of them want to enhance their looks and so they properly mould their nose, lips etc. But, before planning for such surgeries one must carefully listen to the tips of the surgeon. Always the plastic surgeries do not end up successfully as there have been mentioned cases of swellings, non-symmetry and even death.

You need to carefully choose a surgeon for the operation. If you want to lodge complaint about any surgeon you can meet the board of Medical Examiners. You can review the ratings ranked to each surgeon if you surf for the information on the Internet. As experience is an important factor, you must find out from the previous patients.

Cosmetic surgery is really an appealing concept but a careful consideration should be made before planning for it.

Cosmetic Surgery - Will It Really Change Your Life

Thanks to recent advances in surgical techniques and equipment, cosmetic surgery is more specialized than ever. You can literally have the fat sucked out of your thighs through liposuction or your breasts enlarged to your idea of perfection with saline or silicone implants within just a few hours.

And cosmetic surgery isn't just a predominately female deal any longer. Men are having all sorts of cosmetic surgical procedures done these days. Everything from nose jobs (rhinoplasty) to face lifts to eye lifts are fair game in the male arena these days.

The technological advances that have made cosmetic surgery easier and less expensive, not to mention a great deal less painful than in the past, do not account for the meteoric rise in the number of people having plastic surgery, nor for the fact that it has now become common for both genders.

This rise is, in fact, more due to the fact that in American culture there are few things more highly prized than a person's looks. Studies have been done that prove the more attractive a person is the more likely they'll get a job, regardless of how much more skill and experience other people applying for the same job may have.

Images of perfect men and women on television, in print ads, movies, music videos and everywhere else have made people in our culture believe that if they just look a certain way, then everything else in their lives will be fine, even great.

And with famous celebrities touting their cosmetic surgery in front of us daily on television and in movies, it's easy for anyone to believe that if we just looked better, our lives would be perfect.

Now the reality is that a nose job changes just that: the nose. It does nothing to lift a burden of debt or exchange a lackluster love life for the romantic adventure of a lifetime.

Yes, having cosmetic surgical procedures done can give someone a quick boost to their self-esteem, but it won't last as long as the nose job will unless they do some serious positive thinking and inner work along with it. Confidence and self-esteem come from the inside, and changing the outside will only bring temporary relief for those who suffer from deep feelings of inferiority.

So before rushing out to the nearest cosmetic surgeon, anyone considering cosmetic surgery should take a good look at their inside first! If having a cosmetic surgical procedure done will add to their life, great. It's probably a good idea and will enhance their self-esteem and bring them pleasure.

But. If a person thinks that any cosmetic surgery procedure will change their life and make their life perfect (or make them instantly successful and eliminate all their problems), they are in for a rude awakening, I'm sorry to say. Unless the necessary inner work is done to match the outer work, a person can actually become even more insecure than before which often leads to deep depression.

Why? Because they'll ultimately be disappointed over the fact they're still pretty much stuck with their same old self. The person in the mirror may look better, but if they haven't taken stock and gotten rid of negative thinking about themselves, they won't really feel better--they'll just have a perfect sexy cleft in their chins or bigger boobs that they didn't have before.

Cosmetic surgery is not something to undertake lightly or to be used as a method for changing your life, but when done to enhance your life and give you a feeling of satisfaction and/or pleasure, then by all means, find a properly licensed cosmetic surgeon.

Ask for their advice and counsel, as well as their credentials and experience in whatever procedure you want to have done. If the fit between your desires and the cosmetic surgeon's expertise is right, by all means, have your cosmetic surgery and enjoy--just don't expect it to change your life!

Plastic Surgery/Cosmetic Surgery Facts and Figures

Breast Augmentation (Augmentation Mammaplasty) is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a woman's breast. Is it (c)?

Do you really believe on the marketing gimmicks that plastic surgeries are as easy and acceptable as going to a holiday? Can you just have it done by any person and from anywhere? Sorry, a logical brain can not subscribe to this view.

However this is not the only marketing gimmick we have seen so far. Last year around 65000 operations had taken place in UK. And one can easily make out the reason why such advertisements are seen round the corner.

Not only the film actors and actresses or pop stars, but general people, who can afford to have it, are also taking cosmetic surgery to boost up their confidence and self esteem. It is all about getting everything right and only a perfectionist knows, what it does mean.

One may find a lot of such advertisements in the back covers of a number of Woman's Magazines. People are advertising even for plastic or cosmetic surgeries for less in a lot of substandard hospitals away from United Kingdom. Some even do not care about GP's reference.

One cannot help supporting the views of General Medical Council that all patients should be referred by his or her general physician or some other consultant before taking a plastic surgery for their own good.

In many of such cases they hardly even think about the issue regarding 'aftercare'. Whatever let the surgery be, tummy tuck or Breast enlargement, aftercare is as much important as the operation itself had been.

Many research studies have shown that where aftercare is poor, the rate and extent of complications increases. Having a weight loss surgery without an extended aftercare programme is never a safe option.

The operating surgeon ideally needs to keep in touch with the general physician of the patient for a long time after the surgery for safety reasons.

To add to this, one must remember that, any doctor may call himself or herself a plastic surgeon even without any specific surgical training. There are no official restrictions to it if the doctors do not feel any moral obligations to it.

This is reason enough for you to be careful enough while selecting a plastic or cosmetic surgeon.

However, if financial assistance is needed, there are a lot of cosmetic surgery and treatment providers who may help you in getting it easily.

Never settle for gimmicks; it never pays in the long run.

Cosmetic Surgery in a Nutshell

Cosmetic surgery, like other forms of elective surgery, involves a physical change to one's appearance. Also known as plastic surgery, there are two kinds: cosmetic and reconstruction. The latter involves returning an individual's sense of self after some form of injury and/or illness. The former allows the ability to overcome the physical characteristics one was born with. In a way, the former represents the forefront of how changes in technology can allow changes to the human body.
This surgery comes in all types, from the use of prosthetics as in breast augmentation and liposuction to non-invasive forms of surgery like laser hair removal or even laser correction of the eyes to eliminate the need for eye glasses.

None of this comes without a price however. Besides financial concerns, it remains the responsibility of the individual who will undergo such surgery. For this reason, they do need the support of those around them. This is the kind of support that not only affects their decision, but their ability to assimilate the surgical changes to the body.

In the case of surgery for cosmetic - as oppposed to reconstruction - purposes is the issue of aesthetics. Those around them need to understand the significance societies place upon appearance. How the appearance of someone can alter how they are perceived not only as a person, but as a human being. Surgery for aesthetic reasons, provides people with the opportunity to overcome stigmas associated with their appearance. However, what remains most important is that it's a choice.
Many - perfectly valid - arguments have been presented to the contrary regarding surgery for cosmetic purposes. However, the fact remains that human beings have been altering their appearance for quite some time now.

Cosmetic surgery is significant, not only for what it can achieve, but because it's a choice made by the person undergoing it. It's a personal decision about one's own body.
Another consideration for the individual, outside of their support system, is that they should do as much of their own personal research as possible into the different kinds of surgery available for each procedure. For example, the current surgical techniques employed and the potential legal restrictions, as is often the case with silicone prosthetics. In addition, weighing the pros and cons of each technique. Finally, the surgeon themselves. An initial consultation is always recommended, as with any form of elective surgery.

Pros & Cons - Plastic Surgery

Why the "Plastic" in Plastic Surgery?

The word "plastic" comes from the Greek work plastikos, meaning "to mold or shape." History shows that the first plastic surgeries were developed to close intricate wounds or repair skin lost to injuries or illness. These surgeries often used skin flaps to mold or shape the skin to look like the original.

What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?

Cosmetic surgery is performed to reshape normal structures of the body, in order to improve the person’s appearance and self-esteem. Cosmetic surgery is usually not covered by health insurance.

Reconstructive surgery is performed on abnormal structures of the body, caused by congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, trauma, infection, tumors or disease. It is generally performed to improve function, but may also be done to approximate a normal appearance. Reconstructive surgery is generally covered by most health insurance policies, although coverage for specific procedures and levels of coverage may vary greatly.

There are a number of "gray areas" in coverage for plastic surgery that sometimes require special consideration by an insurance carrier. These areas usually involve surgical operations which may be either reconstructive or cosmetic, depending on each patient’s situation. For example, eyelid surgery – a procedure normally performed to achieve cosmetic improvement may be covered if the eyelids are dropping severely and obscuring a patient’s vision.

Will I be able to tolerate the pain post-operatively and what about recovery?

Each patient will tolerate pain post-operatively in a different way, and we consider this. While some patients may describe the pain as an ache, others experience greater discomfort. Appropriate pain medications are prescribed for the post-operative patients, and these help minimize discomfort. Most facial cosmetic operations have minimal discomfort post-operatively. Liposuction is slightly more uncomfortable, and operations that require elevation or tightening of the muscles, such as abdominoplasty or Breast Enlargement have discomfort equal to that of a C-section.

How long is the recuperative period and when can I return to work? The length of time it takes to recuperate after plastic surgery varies depending on the procedure performed, and the person operated on. Most patients will require assistance for the first two days. Then most patients are able to care for themselves, but may still need assistance if they have small children to care for. The specific lengths of disability are outlined below by procedure. These are approximations, and do not include return to exercise.

Nose Job : Usaully get around same day. Return to work 4-5 days. Gross swelling subsides in 6 weeks.

Eyelid Surgery : Usually can get around independently by the second day. With the use of sunglasses, may feel comfortable going to the store by day 3-4, and with makeup could return to working 5-7 days.

Facelift Surgery : Usually can get around independently by the second day. Usually do not feel comfortable going out in public for 5-7 days. Requires 10-14 days before returning to work if in the public eye.

Breast Surgery : Usually can get around independently by the second day. May return to work at 5-7 days if not required to lift more than 10 pounds

Liposuction : Usually can get around independently by the second day, earlier if small number of areas treated. One can return to work in 5-7 days.

Abdominoplasty : Patients may take between 2-4 days before getting around independently. The recovery is almost identical to C-section. One can return to a desk job in 5-7 days, other jobs 10-14 days.

When can I resume regular exercise? The time a patient resumes regular exercise varies based on the operation performed. All patients are encouraged to start a slow walking routine on the second postoperative day. Regular aerobic and more vigorous activities are not allowed during the first 2-3 weeks in order to decrease the risks of bleeding, swelling, and bruising. Weight lifting and contact sports are allowed at 1 month in most cases.

Rhinoplasty

Every year, half a million people who are interested in improving the appearance of their noses seek consultation with facial plastic surgeons. Some are unhappy with the noses they were born with, and some with the way aging has changed their nose. For others, an injury may have distorted the nose, or the goal may be improved breathing. But one thing is clear: nothing has a greater impact on how a person looks than the size and shape of the nose. Because the nose is the most defining characteristic of the face, a slight alteration can greatly improve one's appearance.

If you have wondered how nose surgery, or rhinoplasty, could improve your looks, self-confidence, or health, you need to know how rhinoplasty is performed and what you can expect. No pamphlet can answer all your concerns, but this one can provide answers to many of the questions you may have.

Successful facial plastic surgery is a result of good rapport between patient and surgeon. Trust, based on realistic expectations and exacting medical expertise, develops in the consulting stages before surgery. Your surgeon can answer specific questions about your specific needs.

Rhinoplasty, or cosmetic nasal surgery, is one of the most common cosmetic procedures performed today. The operation is usually carried out because a patient desires to improve his or her appearance. It is also frequently requested for repair of injuries or correction of the increasing disfigurement of the nose that occurs as the patient grows older. In addition to the purely aesthetic reasons for seeking rhinoplasty, patients may also be influenced in their desire for surgery because of related functional problems such as breathing obstruction, which can also be corrected by the operation. In these cases, medical insurance may cover a part or all of the cost of surgery.

Because of the frequency with which this operation is carried out, technical refinements have allowed consistently good results which are considerably better than were possible twenty-five or fifty years ago. Nevertheless, patients must recognize that the goal of this operation is improvement, and that perfection is a goal that remains elusive. Patients who expect too much may be disappointed. During your consultation I will review many typical before and after pictures. The purpose of seeing other patients is not to allow you to pick out the nose that you want, but rather to give you some idea of the types of results that are generally achieved in this type of surgery.

What is the suitable age and sex for the Rhinoplasty?

The timing of the nasal reconstruction will depend on many factors. In general, cosmetic rhinoplasty should be delayed until a patient's facial development is approaching maturity. This is usually around the age of 17 -18.When surgery is carried out to correct breathing problems or to correct deformity produced by injury, it may be advisable to proceed with the operation at an earlier age. There is no upper age limit for nasal reconstruction. Patients in their sixties and seventies choose to have this operation with good results. Many patients combine nasal reconstruction with other types of surgery for aging such as face lift or corrective eyelid surgery.

Tell me about the operationThe operation is carried out in local anesthesia as well as in general anesthesia. Most of the incisions are inside the nose and so visible scarring is limited. Each operation is different, but basically the procedure involves shifting or removal of bone and cartilage and is therefore primarily a modification of the framework of the nose. Following surgery the skin redrapes itself over the new nasal framework and it is almost never necessary to remove excess skin. All of the incisions are made within the nose. Incisions are closed with absorbable suture avoiding the need for removal. Often patients will combine chin or cheekbone augmentation with rhinoplasty.

What is Non-Fracture Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is commonly thought of as a painful operation requiring fracture of the nasal bones and associated with considerable swelling and bruising. This is generally a misconception. It is important to realize that each operation is individualized according to the wants and needs of the patient. In many cases, the surgery requires only changes of cartilage, in which case, recovery is quicker and bruising, swelling and discomfort are much less likely.

While often the operation will require removal of bone or cartilage, there are often occasions where the nose needs augmentation, or filling in. If this is the case, synthetic fillers or the patients own cartilage may be used. This will be discussed on an individual basis.

Is there any extra care required after procedure?

After completion of the operation, a small dressing[sometimes plastic splint] is placed over the nose which remains in place for 2-3 days. Our technique avoids this need. After removal of the cast, there may be some swelling and bruising and stuffiness, but by the end 1-2 weeks most patients find that a large part of the swelling has resolved.

In general, the appearance of the nose continues to improve for as long as a year after the operation. Do not be overly concerned if the nose looks unsatisfactory when the splint is first removed. Swelling is quite variable, and while it usually begins to subside quickly, some patients take much longer than others.

Patients can wash or bathe normally after surgery. After removal of the splint, the patient must be very careful that the nose is not injured until complete healing has taken place.
The first three weeks after surgery are generally the most important. Although many patients can return to work within a few days after surgery, physical activity must be considerably limited for this three-week period. Patients must also be careful to prevent eyeglasses from pressing heavily on the nose until swelling resolves. During the second three weeks after surgery, patients are gradually allowed to increase their activity, but still must avoid any activity which endangers the risk of direct trauma to the nose.

What are the risks and limitations?

Any operation involves certain risks that are usually understood by all patients: for example, the risk of bleeding, infection, or anesthetic complications. Serious complications such as unfavorable appearance, significant scarring, nasal septal perforation or breathing obstruction are possible in unusual cases. These may require additional surgery for correction. Fortunately, these complications are uncommon after rhinoplasty. When they occur and are corrected, they usually do not interfere with the final result of the surgery.

In nearly all cases, there is significant improvement in the appearance and often the function of the nose after rhinoplasty. Unfortunately, as with all cosmetic surgery, the result may not always meet the expectations of the patient. A realistic approach toward the operation warrants that the patient understand that there is a limit to the ability the surgeon has to change the appearance of the nose. The vagaries of healing preclude an absolute prediction of the final appearance. Some problems, such as thick or oily skin, may make it difficult, if not impossible, to achieve more than a moderate improvement. Occasionally, a second procedure may be required to achieve the desired result although, when necessary, this is generally of a minor nature.

Is Rhinoplasty for you?

As with all facial plastic surgery, good health and realistic expectations are prerequisites. Understanding nose surgery is also critical. Since there is no ideal in rhinoplasty, the goal is to improve the nose aesthetically, making it harmonize better with other facial features.

Skin type, ethnic background, and age are important factors to be considered in discussions with your surgeon prior to surgery. Before the nose is altered, a young patient must reach full growth, usually around age fifteen or sixteen. Exceptions are cases in which breathing is severely impaired.

Before deciding on rhinoplasty, ask your facial plastic surgeon if any additional surgery might be recommended to enhance the appearance of your face. Many patients have chin augmentation in conjunction with rhinoplasty to create a better balance of features.

Making the decision for Rhinoplasty?

Whether the surgery is desired for functional or cosmetic reasons, your choice of a qualified facial plastic surgeon is of paramount importance. Many facial plastic surgeons are trained in both ear, nose, throat, and facial cosmetic surgery, which provides you, the patient, with the highest level of training and expertise. Your surgeon will examine the structure of your nose, both externally and internally, to evaluate what you can expect from rhinoplasty. Your surgeon will also discuss factors that may influence the outcome of the surgery, such as skin type, ethnic background, age, degree of deformity, and degree of function of nasal structures.

You can expect a thorough explanation of the surgeon's expectations and the risks involved in surgery. Following a joint decision by you and your surgeon to proceed with rhinoplasty, the surgeon will take photographs of you and discuss the options available. Your surgeon will explain how the nasal structures, including bone and cartilage, can be sculpted to reshape the nose and indicate how reshaping the chin, for example, could enhance the desired results.

After conducting a thorough medical history, your surgeon will offer information regarding anesthesia, the surgical facility to be used, and the costs for the procedure.

Understanding the surgeryThe definition of rhinoplasty is, literally, shaping the nose. First, incisions are made and the skin of the nose is lifted from its underlying bone and cartilage support system. The majority of incisions are made inside the nose, where they are invisible. In some cases, an incision is made in the area of skin separating the nostrils. Next, certain amounts of underlying bone and cartilage are removed or rearranged to provide a newly shaped structure. For example, when the tip of the nose is too large, the surgeon can sculpt the cartilage in this area to reduce it in size. The angle of the nose in relation to the upper lip can be altered for a more youthful look or to correct a distortion.

The skin is then redraped over the new frame and the incisions are closed. A splint is applied to the outside of the nose to help retain the new shape while the nose heals. Soft, absorbent material may be used inside the nose to maintain stability along the dividing wall of the air passages called the septum. Risk factors in rhinoplasty are generally minor, and your facial plastic surgeon will discuss these prior to surgery.

What to expect after surgery?

Immediately after surgery, a small splint will be placed on your nose to protect it and to keep the structure stable for at least five to eight days. If packing is placed inside the nose during surgery, it is removed the morning following the surgery. Your face will feel puffy, especially the first day after surgery. Pain medication may be required. Your surgeon will advise you to avoid blowing your nose for seven days after surgery. In the immediate days following surgery, you may experience bruising and minor swelling in the eye area. Cold compresses often reduce the bruising and discomfort. Absorbable sutures are usually used that do not have to be removed. Nasal dressing and splints are usually removed six or seven days after surgery.

It is crucial that you follow your surgeon's directions, especially instructions to keep your head elevated for a certain period after surgery. Some activities will be prohibited in the weeks after the procedure. Sun exposure, exertion, and risk of injury must be avoided. If you wear glasses, special arrangements must be made to ensure that the glasses do not rest on the bridge of the nose. Tape and other devices are sometimes used to permit wearing glasses without stressing the area where surgery was performed.

Follow-up care is vital for this procedure to monitor healing. Obviously, anything unusual should be reported to your surgeon immediately. It is essential that you keep your follow-up appointments with your surgeon.

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is defined as the visible or palpable development of breast tissue in boys or men. It has been divided into four types: Type I: (pubertal or benign adolescent breast hypertrophy) refers to the common entity seen in pubertal males. Incidence may be as high as 60-70%. It is typically a firm, tender, subareolar mass anywhere from 1-5 cm in diameter. The pubertal adolescent frequently complains of pain in the breasts, particularly when wearing binding clothing. It usually spontaneously resolves within 2 years.

Type II (physiological gynecomastia without evidence of underlying disease, or with evidence of organic disease including the effects of specific drugs) refers to a generalized, nonpainful breast enlargement. It is essential to differentiate between physiologic gynecomastia and breast enlargement due either to a pathologic process or to the use of a specific drug. Careful history taking regarding the time of onset, family history, duration of enlargement, history of systemic illness, weight change, and drug or medication use, is important. Physical examination should include height, weight, blood pressure, breast size, and Tanner staging of both breasts and genitals, in addition to a neurologic assessment.

Type III gynecomastia is general obesity simulating gynecomastia, and Type IV is pectoral muscle hypertrophy.

Common Causes of Type II Gynecomastia

Idiopathic
Familial causes
Associated with anosmia and testicular hypertrophy.
Reifenstein’s syndrome
Associated with hypogonadism and small penis.
Specific illnesses or syndromes
Kleinfelter
Male pseudohermaphroditism
Testicular feminization syndrome
Tumors
Leukemia
Hemophilia
Leprosy
Chronic glomerulonephritis
Miscellaneous drugs
Amphetamines
Anabolic steroids
Birth control pills
Cimetidine
Corticosteroids
Diazepam
Digitalis
Estrogens
Human chorionic gonadotropin
Insulin
Isoniazid and other TB drugs
Ketoconazole
Marijuana
Methadone and other narcotics
Reserpine
Tricyclic antidepressants

Mammaplasty

Breast augmentation (or enlargement) is generally performed on women with underdeveloped breasts or on women who have experienced a decrease in breast size or shape due to pregnancy or weight loss. The surgery consists of lifting the breast tissue and placing an envelope containing a soft, natural-feeling implant material underneath.

Although several implants are available at the present time, the implant which is used most often for augmentation purposes, is made of a silicone shell, and filled with a saline solution. Under certain conditions, silicone gel implants can be used, but these are mostly used for revision surgery. There are a variety of implant designs, all of which have advantages and disadvantages. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss the choice of implant, reasons for the selection, and will review with you the size changes that are possible with the procedure.

How is Breast Augmentation done?

Several different methods are used for placement of the implants. An incision can be made in the crease of the lower part of the breast, along the lower half of the dark skin around the nipple or in the armpit. All of these methods are designed to result in minimal scarring so that the incisions are not easily detected. After the incision is made, the implant is carefully inserted either under the breast tissue or beneath the chest muscle. The implants are then adjusted to ideal size and symmetry before the incision is sutured closed.

What is the breast lift?

Also known as mastopexy, the breast lift is performed on women who have experienced sagging or drooping of the breasts. This procedure may be done in conjunction with augmentation. Several different techniques can be used to correct this condition depending on the degree of sagging. Surgery consists of removing excess skin from around the areola and from the bottom of the breast and rearranging the skin of the breast to tighten the skin envelope. In doing so, the position of the nipple and areola can be elevated to a more natural position.

The surgery is designed to minimize scarring. Some patients who seek breast enlargement actually will need a breast lift for the most desirable result. Your cosmetic surgeon is trained to help you make the proper decision.

What is Breast Reduction?

Large, heavy breasts can be painful due to excessive weight and often cause problems such as back pain and soreness in the shoulders from bra straps which cut into the skin. Breast reduction surgery involves removal of excess breast tissue in combination with reshaping of the breast. The incisions are similar to those used for more extensive breast lifts.

Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss the varying methods of breast reduction and explain the technique that may be best suited for you. Because of the adverse symptoms (back, neck, breast and shoulder pain; limitation of activities) associated with abnormally large breasts, insurance will often cover some or all of the cost of this type of surgery. Be sure to check with your insurance provider.

Keeping you comfortableA surgical dressing is usually placed to protect the incisions. Some swelling, bruising and minor discomfort may be experienced for several days after the surgery. Discomfort can be easily controlled with pain medication.

How will I look after?

You may be required to wear a supportive bra. Your doctor will advise you as to when you may resume normal activity. After healing, your breast augmentation should add pleasing dimensions to your overall proportion and symmetry.

Blepharoplasty

Eyelid surgery (Blepharoplasty) is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the upper and lower eyelids. Excessive skin and wrinkles of the eyelids are signs of aging, making the eyes look angry and tired. At times, fullness of the upper eyelid and bagginess of the lower eyelid could also be a familial trait unrelated to age. It is usually present to some degree since childhood. Correction can be done anytime after age 18. Once it is corrected, it is gone forever.

Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids that tend to sag with time and the puffy bags below the eyes. For upper eyelid surgery, the incision is hidden in the skin fold; protruding orbital fat and excessive skin are removed. This allows a platform for ideal eye make-up applications, giving a dramatic result. Lower eyelid surgery can be approached in two ways. When fat is the only problem, we prefer an incision on the inside surface of the lower lid. Fat is then removed without disturbing the other structures. Otherwise, the incision is placed below the lash line, and low lid wrinkles are then excised along with fat tissue. A modified technique can be used to raise the upper lid line higher or to form a double eyelid. This enables better eye-shadow application.

The procedure usually takes about 2 hours and can be performed in the office using local anesthesia. Stitches can be removed after five days. Blepharoplasty can be done as a single procedure, or in conjunction with other facial surgery such as a facelift or a browlift.

Plastic Surgery

Rhinoplasty
Face Lift
Blepharoplasty
Hair Transplantation
Gynecomastia
Mammaplasty
Liposuction
Cheiloplasty
Otoplasty
Tummy Tuck
Mentoplasty
Lipofilling

Face Lift

Aging loosens the skin and causes wrinkles which are more noticeable on the forehead, beside the eyes, around the mouth, and under the chin. In addition, the long-term effects of gravity, exposure to sun, dry air, and general stress also take their toll on an individual's face and neckline. Facelift is an effective rejuvenating operation for an aging, tired face. More than just tightening loose skin, a facelift can also transform sagging, tired-looking cheeks, jowls, and neck into a face with a more youthful, rested look.

A facelift can considerably reduce these signs of aging by removing excess fat,

tightening the underlying muscles, and redraping the skin around the neck and face. The incisions are placed along the hairline and natural skin creases. Skin and underlying tissues are lifted and realigned to a more youthful position. The operation usually takes between two to four hours.

The patient can be up and about on within twenty four hours of surgery. Smoking, direct sunlight, aspirin, vitamin E and physical exertion should be avoided. Sutures are removed one week following the operation. Chemical peel is sometimes performed six to eight weeks after facelifting to further smooth out fine wrinkles.

Facelifts can be done alone, or frequently performed in conjunction with another procedure such as a browlift, eyelid surgery, or nose reshaping. If your problem areas are limited to the neck, a more conservative procedure, known as a "necklift" will be recommended. In some cases, a facelift can reduce the outward signs of aging by eight to ten years.

There are many variations to the facelift procedure. The incision typically begins in the hair near the temple and continues in front of the ear, around the ear lobe into the crease behind the ear, then into or along the lower scalp. Muscles and sagging tissue are tightened, excess skin or underlying fat is removed, or suctioned and the remaining skin is repositioned or tightened to create a more youthful look. Your surgeon will then apply sutures (stitches) or metal clips on the scalp to secure the layers of underlying tissue and close the incision. If the neck needs lifting, a small incision may be made under the chin as well. Your surgeon may apply small drainage tubes behind the ear to drain away fluids that might accumulate. In addition your head may also be wrapped in bandages to reduce any swelling.

How long does a facelift take?

Facelift surgery generally requires two to four hours to perform, depending upon the complexity of the procedure and your particular goals.

What type of anesthesia is used?

A facelift may be performed under local anesthesia with either light or deep sedation, or general anesthesia. The longer the procedure is expected to take, the more likely that general anesthesia will be recommended. You can discuss and determine your particular needs for anesthesia with your surgeon.

Where is the procedure performed?

A facelift may be performed in a surgeon's office-based surgical suite, an outpatient surgery center, or a hospital.

When can I return home and resume normal activities?

Patients usually return home the same day, although, may hospitalize patients for a day when using general anesthesia. Most people return to work and their usual activity within ten days.

How do I prepare for a facelift?

During your initial consultation, your surgeon will discuss the changes that you would like to make to your appearance. Since the appearance of your face and neck is a matter of personal perception and preference, you will need to discuss your concerns in detail so your surgeon can determine the appropriate alternatives. You also should make arrangements ahead of time for someone to drive you to and from your procedure and to assist you with your daily activities during your recovery period.

Prior to your surgical procedure, the surgeon will perform a complete health history and physical. Knowledge of your allergies, medications and previous surgeries should be brought to your surgeon's attention at this time. Smoking cessation is advised for at least one week prior to your surgery. Smoking inhibits blood flow to your skin and may delay the healing process of your incision areas. Specific instructions to assist you in preparing for this procedure will be given to you after the health history and physical is complete. Depending on your individual health status, the instructions may include guidelines regarding your diet, alcohol intake, smoking and which medications to take or avoid. Your experience will be much smoother if you remain compliant with your surgeon's instructions.

What precautions are necessary during recovery?

You will have a bandage for the first night. The tiny surgical drains placed in the hair behind your ears will be painlessly removed along with your bandages on the following morning. After an eyelid procedure, ice compresses are applied for 24 hours, but the eyes are not bandaged and lubricating ointment/drops used may cause blurred vision for one to two hours. Immediately after the facelift, you may notice a tight sensation in the neck and under the chin. This feeling may last several weeks and is a normal part of recovery.

You are encouraged to shampoo your hair daily after your procedure with a mild shampoo. A light cover-up may be applied to the eyelids starting four days after your procedure. Eyelid makeup including mascara, eye shadow, eyeliner and artificial eyelashes may also be applied four days after your procedure. However, it is important to remove all makeup thoroughly at the end of the day using an upward motion. You may use oiled eye pads for removal of eye makeup. All stitches (sutures) will be removed within seven to ten days; eyelid stitches (sutures) are to be removed in four days.

What are the possible complications after a facelift?

Facelifts rarely produce serious complications. The most common complication after a facelift is a collection of blood under the skin (hematoma). In less than two percent of facelift operations, this collection of blood must be removed in the operating room immediately post-procedure. Occasionally, small hematomas are removed several days after the procedure. Complications such as infection, eye irritation, delayed healing or excessive scarring are rare.

Small sensory nerves near the surface of the skin are interrupted during a facelift and portions of your scalp, cheeks, and neck may feel numb. Sensation usually returns over several months, but some numbness may last indefinitely. Facial nerve damage could occur, but is extremely rare.

With a facelift, the scars are placed either within the hair or in natural creases and lines of the face so that they are inconspicuous or easily hidden by makeup or hair styling. Your scars fade with time and are usually not noticeable. It is always important to be informed about the possible complications before any surgery. Be sure to discuss any concerns you may have with your surgeon.

What results can I expect after a facelift?

Some swelling and discoloration is expected following your facelift, but usually subsides within 10-14 days. Your surgeon will want to examine you several times during the week or two following your facelift. Your stitches will be removed in stages, usually between the third and tenth postoperative days. Your hair around your temples may be thin at first and your skin may feel dry for several months. You will feel happier with your facelift if you realize that the final results may not be immediately apparent.

Remember that a facelift cannot stop the aging process. Although excess skin is removed and wrinkles are diminished, your skin continues to age. In time you may feel the need to have a second procedure. As you grow older the skin of the upper lids becomes looser and may create additional folds in which case an upper lid "touch-up" can be done. While additional procedures are done for some, most have only one facelift and remain pleased with their appearance.

Hair Transplantation

The skin is the second largest organ in the body and of primary importance, integral to the survival of mammalian life but often overlooked when examining the health and welfare of an individual. The heterogeneous skin structure is derived from the ectoderm and mesoderm of an embryo giving rise to the epidermis and dermis respectively. Within these generalized layers are specialized appendages also derived from the ectoderm and/or mesoderm including sensory nerves, sweat glands and hair follicles. The skin as a whole rests on subcutaneous tissue largely composed of a loose mesh of collagen fiber, fat cells and muscle tissue.

What are the diverse range of functions?

Support : The skin acts as a flexible physical support and covering for underlying tissues.

Temperature : Through its extensive blood supply and sweat glands, the mammalian skin is able to maintain the constant temperature of a homoiotherm.

Excretion : Waste materials such as salts and water are removed from the body via the skin.

Vitamin formation : Photochemical action in skin produces vitamin D. The skin is our primary source.

Sensory function : Through the extensive network of sensory receptors we have sensations of pressure, texture, temperature and pain.

Pigmentation : Melanin pigments protect against the excesses of ultra violet light.

Protection : The epidermis prevents desiccation of the internal organs and so provides the fundamental requirement for mammalian land colonization - freedom from water dependence. It prevents absorption of unwanted and potentially dangerous chemicals.

Immunological defense : The epidermis, particularly the stratum corneum (the outer most keratinized skin layer), provides a passive defense against entry of opportunistic pathogenic organisms. Skin performs an active role in immunity through immunological surveillance.
In short, the skin acts as a barrier and is the primary organ through which we interact with the external world.

Significant in many of these properties is the hair follicle appendage. The key role of hair is to provide protection against heat loss. Hair traps air adjacent to the skin to provide an invisible, insulating layer. Several mammalian species produce special dense winter coats with added heat trapping properties. Otters have hair to trap a layer of air around their bodies keeping them warm and making them more buoyant while they swim. Many species go through molting cycles in tune with seasonal changes.

Hair can provide indications of sexual development through onset of secondary sexual characteristics from development of a mane on a male lion to beard development in humans. Hair may also be of importance in attracting mates and may be based on color - such as silver back mountain gorillas - distribution or quality, all indicators of the general health and vitality of an individual. Alternatively, it may aid in camouflage for survival where mute tones or dappled color blend with an animal's environment. Hair fiber also helps with protection forming a tough barrier helping protect the epidermis from minor abrasions and/or from ultra violet light. Specialized hair such as eyebrows and eyelashes protect the eyes by channeling or sweeping away fluids, dust and debris. Nasal hair plays an important role in trapping air borne foreign particles before reaching the lungs. Hair fiber may also increase the surface area for faster evaporation of sweat from neighboring apocrine glands. Some hair follicles have a highly developed nerve network around them and provide sensory, tactile information about the environment. Consequently, the hair follicle is of great importance to the survival of mammals.

Although its importance for humans has diminished it is still significant - not just biologically, but also through cosmetic and commercial considerations. The secondary functions of hair are now of primary importance for humans. Hair styles are used to make a statement, to identify the individual with a particular faction of society, and/or to attract a mate. Hair is the foundation for a multi million dollar industry focused on presenting, augmenting, and preserving scalp hair plus removing unwanted body hair.

What are the causes of Hair Loss?

Hair loss& hair fall are two separate things. Hairfall is a natural daily occurrence. Human head contains over 100, 000 hairs and one normally sheds 100 to 150 hairs a day, every hair is genetically programmed schedule that includes :

Growth [anagen]
Resting [catagen]
Shedding [telogen]
In general 85% of the hair on your head grow approximately 1 centimeter per month for about 2 to 6 years & then fall off. Hair loss is primarily caused by a combination of aging, a change in hormones, and a family history [genetic] of baldness. As a rule, the earlier hair loss begins, the more severe the baldness will become. Hair loss can also be caused by burns or trauma, in which case hair replacement surgery is considered a reconstructive treatment. However, hairs on back of your head are genetically programmed & scheduled to last long. even at the age of 65 people retain hairs on back. Approximately 30 percent of Indian men will show signs of male pattern baldness by the age of 20. The incidence of male pattern baldness increases 10 percent per decade through a man's life. The causes of female hair loss range from iron deficiency to thyroid abnormalities to childbirth. For both sexes, hair loss often causes diminished self-esteem, stress, anxiety, depression and feelings of social inadequacy.

Baldness is often blamed on poor circulation to the scalp, vitamin deficiencies, dandruff, and even excessive hat-wearing. All of these theories have been disproved.

If hair is a symbol of a person's youth, the loss of it can act as a reminder of approaching old age. For men entering their forties, the onset of midlife is often accompanied by a series of crisis related to the growing doubts a man might have about the direction of his life. He wonders if he's realized the dreams of his youth and he begins to recognize that his life is already half over. The loss of his hair is another natural reminder of this process. It can cause insecurity, a sense of loss, even depression.

So, the loss of hair in a younger person can be doubly devastating. For this person, hairloss is something that is supposed to happen to older people. A young man in his twenties isn't prepared to deal with his mortality in the same way a man twice his age might be. In fact, even the thought of his own midlife is the furthest thing from this man's mind. He and his friends are into all sorts of things like swimming, hiking, snow boarding, rock climbing, nightclubbing, and having a good time.

Many young people who have experienced hairloss report of feeling isolated socially, even though the cause of that isolation may simply be that they don't feel comfortable in public anymore. Lots of young men who've lost some of their hair will take to wearing baseball caps to cover their balding scalps and many report that they would refuse to go to places that required them to remove their caps. This further limits their social opportunities and in turn this causes a deepening feeling of isolation.

Some young men suffering hairloss may report that they feel less productive at work. A common complaint is a loss of confidence. This can result in those individuals being less apt to succeed on the job. This can be a real problem for salespeople or personnel managers for example, where outward confidence and constant interaction with other people is vital to success.

It can even be more of a problem when a woman starts to lose her hair. Hairloss in women is not accepted as part of the aging process in our society. A very well-known stylist once said: "A woman's hair is her glory". She was right too. A thick, luxurious head of hair is critical to what we consider attractive in a woman. The loss of that hair can be devastating. While we will tolerate hairloss in men, a woman can become ostracized if she suffers this same condition. A woman without hair is considered unattractive, an oddity.

The first symptoms of depression will alter the way other people perceive that individual. The physical change due to the actual loss of hair may become almost secondary. If a person suffering from hairloss feels less confident, less sure of himself; he or she will begin to appear so to others.

What about female pattern hair loss?

The most common type of hair loss seen in women is androgenetic alopecia, also known as female pattern alopecia or baldness. This is seen as hair thinning predominantly over the top and sides of the head. It affects approximately one-third of all susceptible women, but is most commonly seen after menopause, although it may begin as early as puberty. Normal hair fall is approximately 100-125 hairs per day. fortunately, these hairs are replaced. True hair loss occurs when lost hairs are not regrown or when the daily hair shed exceeds 125 hairs. Genetically, hair loss can come from either parent's side of the family
What's Hair Transplantation?Baldness afflicts millions of men and women. Although some individuals do not find this to be a distressing condition, there are a great number of people who do. Sometimes, the use of wigs or hair styling serves to adequately cover the bald areas. In other cases, patients choose to have surgical correction in an attempt to achieve a more permanent improvement. There are basically three types of surgical procedures used to correct baldness.

In hair transplantation, it's this non-miniaturized hair on the back and sides, that is surgically moved to the top of the head in the form of a tiny skin graft. Because the hair on the permanent horseshoe is genetically programmed to grow a lifetime, it will continue to grow even though it's been transplanted to a different site. This is medical fact, and has been repeatedly proven for more than thirty five years.

For some patients, a hairline may need recreation; for others, more extensive hair replacement may be required. A few patients may want to add density to existing transplants, and others might want to correct a transplanted hairline with which they are dissatisfied. Some patients want to correct sparse eyebrows or a scars on the scalp. All these individuals, both men and women, are good candidates for the procedure.

Do I need consultation?

During your consultation we will discuss with you in detail about your hair loss pattern, baldness, available donor area & hair density, area to be treated, hairline, number & type of grafts & any medical problem if you have. Bald area can be photographed & can be shown on computer for better understanding. [Blood pressure, Diabetes or Heart problem]. He will also take detail history from you about your family members suffering from baldness. He will examine your hairs in detail for its quality, texture, elasticity strength& density, future hair line, & Number of grafts required. You should discuss freely about your expectations, procedure & treatment.

Basic investigations: Haemogram, blood sugar level, Bleeding time, clotting time, Blood group & routine urine analysis are to be done by any laboratory. Some times additional tests are required if doctor feels that it is necessary.

How is the procedure performed?

Under local anesthesia, the donor hair grafts are harvested from a strip of skin taken from area between two ears. The strip is divided into small units of skin (grafts), each containing one, two or three hair - the follicular units. Then, recipient sites are created in the area of hair loss by making small slits in the bald skin. Each site is no bigger than the opening created by the needle used when blood is drawn from your arm. Then each of the grafts is carefully placed into each recipient site. The donor site in the back of the head is not visible. Three to four months later, the transplanted hair begins to grow, and continues to grow a half inch per month for the rest of your life.

Why do some transplants look "more natural" than others?

Although hair transplantation has been performed for almost 35 years, it's never become as popular as you might expect. With good reason.. it sometimes looks conspicuous and unnatural! One reason is that old fashioned grafts were simply too big. They contained 10 to 20 hairs, and when they grew, a tufted doll's head resulted. However, if the grafts are made very, very small, with only one follicular unit per graft, the density of the hair can be more evenly distributed and exactly approximate nature's way. This is the basic principle that's used in what's commonly called follicular unit grafting.

What's the difference between a micrograft and a follicular unit graft?

Micrografts and follicular unit grafts are often confused. Micrografts are simply grafts which contain either one or two hairs. They are cut randomly from the donor strip with no attention paid to the follicular unit groupings. Follicular unit grafts are actual isolated follicular units that naturally occur in groupings of one, two, or three hairs. In other words, one three haired follicular unit graft could be divided into 3 one haired micrografts.

What's the advantage of trimming a follicular unit graft?

When many technicians prepare follicular unit grafts, they usually don't trim away the intervening skin between each follicular unit. So, the untrimmed graft is moved to the bald area with more skin than is necessary. To remove the excess skin (and not damage the oil gland and tiny adjacent telogen hairs) is a very time consuming process and requires both high magnification and experience. However it's worth it. Trimmed grafts can be more densely packed, and the occasional light skin color that surrounds each hair is eliminated. "Trimmed follicular unit grafts" are the gold standard for hair transplantation. They are rarely performed because the task is simply too time consuming and expensive. When hairlines are created with trimmed follicular unit grafts, the results are astonishing! Our technicians prepare "trimmed follicular unit grafts" exclusively!

How is the perfect frontal hairline created?

Only trimmed follicular unit, "one haired grafts" in the front hairline are used. Often times 100 to 200 of them. Single hair follicular unit grafts are placed in the front rows, and behind them the two hair grafts, and behind them the three haired grafts -- thus attempting to duplicate the subtle feathered look of a natural thinning hairline. The grafts are delicately handled, refrigerated and submerged in nutrient solution throughout the entire process.

If a graft is prepared and handled in a meticulous, non-traumatic manner -- it will grow essentially 100% of the time. If the donor strip is harvested with a multibladed scalpel, the chances of follicle damage is increased. If the individual grafts are cut by inexperienced technicians, or prepared with automated graft cutting devices, the chances are many will be damaged. If the graft is allowed to dry out, or if it's not kept cool sub optimal growth will result.

How much pain should I expect?

Are there any complications?Essentially none. Most patients describe the session as easier a visit to the dentist. For those who are particularly anxious about discomfort, we can prescribe appropriate premedication or use nitrous oxide analgesia. Complications rarely occur, but occasionally numbness in the donor site may persist for two or three months after the procedure.

What happens after hair transplant surgery?

Patient can resume light work from third day on wards. Sutures on back of head get absorbed & they are not visible from day one. However patient should not do any exercise for three weeks or shun from any activity which will increase pressure in transplanted area. Mild swelling on forehead is possible which disappears after day or two. You can have head bath 4th day on wards. Crusts, scabs & effulivum falls off in next 4 weeks. No special care, medicines or frequent visits to doctor are required.

The hairs will fall out of the newly transplanted follicles within two to six weeks after the procedure. It is very similar to a tree being transplanted and the leaves falling off. Hairs start growing after 12 weeks & they continue to grow for rest of your life. You can wash them, trim them, style them anyway you like. You are a most likely candidate for hair transplant if answer is yes to following questions.

Age is above 18 years.
Stabilised hairloss.
Medical treatment tried without success.
No active scalp infection.
Adequate hairs on back & sides of head [as only 15%of available hairs can be transplanted].
No smoking or ready to discontinue two weeks before surgery.
No alcohol consumption or ready to discontinue two weeks before surgery.
No diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, bleeding disorders, keloid tendency& any systemic disorder.
Reasonable expectations.
Above information is in general. If you are serious this further with Dr. Alkhairy, next best step is a one-on-one consultation. This is the best way to find out if you are a suitable candidate, and what type of Plan would work best for you. Feel free to ask for more information. I hope to hear from you.

Is the hair transplant surgery painful?

You may have heard that the process is very painful. But with the proper technique in the application of anesthesia, it does not have to be a painful process at all. It all depends on how the surgeon applies the anesthesia, and our office uses the least painful process available for the comfort of our patients. For a hair transplantation process, every surgeon uses either a nerve blocking process or a local anesthesia (general anesthesia is never used in this case). Any pain at all during our procedure would be during the initial needle injection. Our clinic uses several techniques to reduce even this small pain. The anesthetic is warmed to reduce reaction time, the skin is pre-numbed before each localized shot and the finest gauge needle (30 gauge) is used to minimize this pain. Initially, the patient is given a sedative through an IV medication. This sedative puts the patient into a relaxed, "twilight zone" state to minimize any pain there might be from the subsequent injections. The tumescent technique is used for prolonging the anesthesia time. Most patients have informed me that the process was less painful than a routine trip to the dentist. In addition, the day after the hair transplant process, 50% of our patients do not require any pain relievers at all, and the other 50% will take Voveran for only a few days until the discomfort is gone. Few of our patients request a prescription pain reliever. We feel that our procedures are much less painful in comparison to many other clinics. The only disadvantage to this "twilight zone" anesthesia is that the patient will not be able to drive on the day of the surgery. However, should the patient forego the "twilight zone" anesthesia and opt instead for a local anesthesia, he will be able to drive on that day.

What is a typical hair transplant surgery day like?

Patient has to report at morning 9am with pathological reports.

The patient signs a consent form for surgery.
Oral sedation & antibiotics are given to prepare for surgery.
The area for transplantation is confirmed and the new hairline design is drawn onto the scalp.
Photo documentation & shown to patient before surgery starts.
The patient enters the operating room and changes into surgery clothes.
DURING SURGERY

The patient is either in sitting or lying position, relaxes, and listens to music while the heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation are carefully monitored.
It will take our surgical team about four to five hours to perform a 1000-12000 grafts session, six to eight hours for a-2000 graft session. Your personal needs will be taken care of. There will be lunch break. You can use your mobile phone. Each patient receives the full attention of our staff.
The patient is given local anesthesia with or without a mild sedative intravenously.
Hair is taped up in the back to allow access to the selected area of hair-bearing donor scalp. A skin strip of the permanent hair along the lower back of the scalp is used [width & length of strip varies as per requirement]. Afterwards, this thin scar will be easily hidden underneath the surrounding permanent hair.
Using a very fine 30 gauge needle, the scalp is anesthetized. Once the scalp is numbed, the surgery is virtually painless as the nerves are blocked.
After the strip of hair bearing skin is removed from the back of the scalp, The back of the scalp is sutured by the surgeon. This scar will be barely detectable in a few months and will be completely hidden by hair growth.
Two to four technicians will start dissecting hair grafts in natural groups of 1, 2, 3, 4, hairs with magnification.
Dr. Alkhairy will personally transplant grafts into the "recipient" area. Mini-slits are made for the bi-follicular grafts (2 to 4 hairs) while 19 gauge needle holes are made for the micro grafts (1 to 2 hairs. )Grafts are transplanted with angle so that, when hairs grow they will blend with surrounding hairs & appear very natural. healthy black hairs are transplanted in front. Grafts containing grey hairs are transplanted after healthy hairs.
After all grafts have been completed and checked, the donor and recipient areas are cleaned and is bandaged. The patient is given a list of post-operative instructions and medications. If I. V. sedation is used, the patient must not drive home himself. It will be necessary to arrange for transportation home/hotel prior to arrival at the clinic.
Bandage will be removed next day morning. Outof town patient is fit to travel .
Patients are encouraged to contact doctor at any time.
What steps should I take before the surgery?Pre-Operation Instruction

Maintain an adequate length of hair [atleast 1"] on the back of your head. Your donor grafts will be removed from here. Stitched skin incision will not be visible from day one.
Two weeks before surgery
No Finpacia or Minoxidil.
No Aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications that contain Aspirin.
One week before surgery
No Vitamin E.
No Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng or other herbal supplements.
One day before surgery
No Alcohol /tobacco.
Make arrangements for someone to take you to and from the clinic.
Confirm your appointment.
On surgery day
Wash your hair in the morning using your regular shampoo.
Have a light breakfast two hour prior to your procedure.
Wear a button-down shirt and comfortable, easily laundered pants. You should also bring an adjustable baseball cap or scarf along with you.
No tight hats or caps.
Do not wear anything that will have to be pulled tightly over your head.
Have someone take you home after surgery. You should not drive any vehicle.
How will the surgery affect me when I return to work? For the first twelve hours [overnight], there will be a bandage around the head & it will be removed next day morning. If you have the surgery done on the hairline, the small scabs will remain for seven to ten days. Some patients may want to cover the area with a cap at work if they desire. If you have partial hair, it is much easier to cover up the area, or you can use a camouflage product. When the small scabs fall off after seven to ten days, the freshly implanted grafts will be pink, slightly shiny skin which is usually a similar color to the surrounding normal skin and is minimally obvious at first. After approximately two weeks, the areas where the grafts were transplanted are barely visible. Pre-existing hair around or adjacent to the transplanted grafts may shed, giving a thinner look, but will begin to grow back within a few months. This temporary thinning of pre-existing hair is called Telogen Effluvia. Unfortunately there is a time lag between this increased thinning of pre-existing hair and re-growth of transplanted hair, so do not be alarmed if this happens.

How many sessions of surgery will I need?

If you have a completely bald area, it may take two to three surgeries to cover. If you have an area partially covered with hair, it may take only one surgery to fill in the area. Our goal is to restore about twenty-five percent of the donor's original density in each surgery. After two surgeries, the density is at about fifty percent which is often adequate coverage to satisfy the patient. The time between each session is usually four to six months in order to see how the hair is growing out and to provide more equal distribution. Correct evaluation & estimation is possible after personal consultation.

How long does it take to fill in the balding area?

Usually it takes three to four months for the hair to grow out, and after that it will grow about half and inch per month which is the same rate as the donor hair. Initial hair quality is usually very thin, softer in texture like baby hair and then it becomes coarser over time. Sometimes the initial hair is curlier, then straightens in about one year. The color of the initial hair may also be darker. It may be lightened by the sun later.

How long will the transplanted hair continue to grow?

The transplanted hair is the hair from the back of the head, so even though it is transplanted, it will still have the same life span. Normally a hair follicle sheds every three to six years and then grows back from the same root. Thus, the transplanted hair continues the same life cycle.

Can hair transplantation affect the rest of my hair?

Hair roots are very tough and can tolerate surgery or any irritation to the scalp. We know this because we can see how difficult it is for people to remove unwanted hair. A hair can be plucked out hundreds of times and just keeps growing back. The actual physical trauma of cutting the scalp, when inserting the donor grafts, can cut the shafts and/or damage some hair follicles. But more significant is the interruption to the pre-existing hair's blood supply which is enough to cause the shedding of this pre-existing hair. It is temporary as most lost hair will grow back after a few months.

What are the side effects or complications?

There are some minor, temporary complications.

Bleeding : Some bleeding is normal and will stop with simple pressure. Persistent bleeding occurs in about one in a few hundred cases. Additional stitching is rarely required.

Pain : Pain is usually fairly minimal and lasts only a few days. 50 % of our patients do not require any pain relievers, and the others take Tylenol for a few days.

Numbness : Some transient numbness is inevitable, and usually lasts from three to eighteen weeks. It is rarely bothersome or long-lasting.

Hiccups : Hiccups may occur after surgery. The cause is not well known, but hiccups seem to occur more frequently after hair transplantation than scalp reduction. The incidence of this complication is about 5%. It usually lasts several hours to several days. If left untreated, the hiccups may interfere when you eat and sleep, but there is a medication that the doctor can prescribe to ease the hiccups.

Itching : Some itching commonly occurs but is rarely troublesome and lasts only a few days. Shampooing the hair daily will help the discomfort.

Swelling : There is some swelling in nearly all cases. It affects the forehead and the area around the eyes and lasts two to five days, being maximal on the fourth day. However, it does little harm and lasts no more than a week. We can prescribe you some medication to reduce the swelling.

Infection : This happens in one in several thousand cases and is easily cured with antibiotics. We will provide you antibiotics prior and after the procedure to prevent it from happening.

Scarring : Keloid scarring occurs only in pre-disposed individuals, and even more rarely (1/1000 cases) has this keloid scarring been hypertrophy to the point of "ridging."

Cysts : One or more cysts may occur in the recipient area when many mini-grafts have been inserted. They usually disappear by themselves after a few weeks or immediately with various simple treatments. They are not usually more than 2 or 3 mm in diameter, i. e., the size of small pimples.

Neuralgia : When a medium-sized nerve, such as the occipital nerve, is either cut or bruised, patients can get either numbness, tingling or "pins and needles" sensations, sometimes even "shooting pains" and hypersensitivity of skin in that part of the scalp. Once in a while someone reports varying combinations of the above, usually lasting for one to four weeks. Very rarely have patients had neuralgia last a longer time period. Prolonged or severe symptoms are exceedingly rare and virtually always disappear within a few months.

Can fallen hairs or hairs from other body area be transplanted? No.

Can hairs be transplanted in eyebrows, beard, moustaches or pubic area?Yes.

Cheiloplasty

Duration of the Surgery: Lip Augmentation surgery takes 1-2 hours. Done in local Aaesthesia. This can be done in general anaesthesia if coupled with other procedures.

Techniques: Available implants for Lip Augmentation are of two types:

Liquid form
Sheet form
In short, the liquid collagen injections have lost their popularity because of the short-lasting results (only few weeks). At the present time, the most common implant for lip augmentation is in sheet form: Alloderm, Dermaplant, Fascia, or Gore-Tex. Finally, the patient's own fat can be used for Lip Augmentation. It is usually easily accepted by the body and gives a permanent result. Here are more details about each of the techniques:

Alloderm and Dermaplant are freeze-dried collagen in sheet form that are obtained from deceased human donors (the patients are not required to find a donor). Such natural implants form soft, pliable and naturally looking lips, and are easily accepted by the body because they are made of natural tissue. However, the satisfactory results last only for about a year, after which the implant starts shrinking. While looking for longer-lasting results, surgeons still like this technique a lot for its ease of placement and consistent results.
Fascia is dense white connective tissue surrounding the muscles. Some of it can be collected from various parts of the body for a cosmetic surgery. This technique also provides only temporary results: the body usually absorbs fascia in 6-12 months, and the lips shrink back to their initial size.

Gore-Tex is a cross between cloth and rubber and is used for making water resistant material. Gore-Tex may feel stiff at the beginning, but most people get accustomed to the feeling. The implants are easily accepted by the human body, and the effect of Gore-Tex is permanent. There have been cases, however, when Gore-Tex implants pushed their way out of the patient's lips. This is probably the biggest disadvantage of this technique.

Fat Injection. The person's fat can be collected from the other parts of the body and injected into the lips for their augmentation. The results usually are smooth and lasting, as the body easily accepts the implant made of its own fat. The implant may shrink for the initial 3 months after the surgery, bit after it stops shrinking, the results remain permanent.
Length of Hospitalization: Outpatient (released on the same day).

What will happen after the procedure?
Discomfort : Minimal, most often the patients can do without pain control medication.

Swelling and Bruising : 3-7 days, or up to 3 weeks in case of fat injection.

Back to normal: You can resume work immediately if you were not sedated, or the next day if you were sedated.

Final Result: The final result will be visible as soon as the swelling and bruising disappear. In most cases, however, the result will not be permanent. Liquid collagen injections may last up to six weeks. Alloderm and Dermaplant implants may last up to a year. After fat injections, the lips may shrink during the first three months, but after that the results may be permanent. Gore-Tex implants are permanent.

What will be the risks and complications?
When done by a qualified plastic surgeon, Lip Augmentation is considered to be one of the safest, lowest-risk procedures, and the results are generally positive. Nevertheless, there always are risks associated with surgery, as well as possible specific complications associated with this procedure:

Infection, reaction to anesthesia, slow healing, hematomas requiring additional surgeries, numbness, scarring (usually from heavy infection), itching, swelling or unsatisfactory results are possible with any surgical procedure.
Implant extrusion: rarely, the implant may push its way out of the lips. It can also move to another location inside the lip.
Unnatural movement of the lips when smiling or talking.
Lips feel unnaturally stiff to a touch or kiss.
There may be permanent discolorations from bruising.
Asymmetrical lips

What are the contraindications?
People with a reaction to the pretreatment collagen skin test, who are allergic to lidocaine, or who have serious allergy history should not consider Lip Augmentation. Some of the other increased risk conditions are:

Taking Accutane for six months prior or following the surgery. It may increase the chances of keloid-like scarring.
Collagen, scarring or connecting tissue disorders.
Lupus.
Active diseases.
Diabetes.
Problems with clotting.
Excessive oral plaque or dental abscesses.
Oral herp.

Liposuction

Liposuction, also called liposculpture, lipoplasty, or suction lipectomy, is a cosmetic surgery technique developed by cosmetic surgeons to remove stubborn fat deposits that don't respond to dieting and exercise. These fatty bulges are most commonly found in the thighs, hips, abdomen, buttocks, knees, ankles, calves and arms. They are also found in the facial areas such as the chin, cheeks, jowls and neck. Liposuction can be performed alone or in conjunction with other cosmetic surgery procedures such as a tummy tuck, facelift or chin augmentation to achieve the desired result.

Are you a good candidate?
The best candidates for liposuction are healthy men and women with good skin elasticity and realistic expectations for liposuction. "Realistic" means that improvement, not always perfection, is the goal. The fatty bulges should be localized to a few areas and the individual should be near their ideal body weight. Cellulite, or waffled skin, will not be cured by liposuction.

It is natural for women, in particular, to accumulate fatty deposited on the hips, buttocks and abdomen; and fat in men tends to accumulate around the mid-section. Some men experience gynecomastia, or enlarged breasts.

Liposuction can enhance the appearance of men and women of all ages while boosting self esteem. This procedure is not for obese people. It is not meant to replace good eating and exercise habits, or to counter obesity, however, liposuction can offer help to remove unwanted fatty deposits in many areas of the body.

Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss your condition to see if liposuction is right for you.

Are there risks in all surgical procedures?
Liposuction is a very popular procedure that is a normally safe and effective method of removing excess fat. Like all surgery, any cosmetic surgery involves some level of risk. To help ensure a successful outcome, the patient should be a good candidate, the surgeon should be well-trained in liposuction techniques, the surgical facility should be properly equipped and the patient should follow the doctor's instructions and advice.

Even with the most skilled surgeon, however, variations from the ideal result are possible. Complications include uneven skin surface, especially in patients with poor skin elasticity, bleeding, infection, discoloration, fluid accumulation beneath the skin, numbness and scarring. Although complications with this surgery are extremely rare, infection and excessive loss of fluid can lead to serious illness and even death.

Liposuction can offer a new shape for people who never thought it was possible. Discuss the benefits and risks with your surgeon given your particular circumstances.

What to do before surgery?
During your consultation, you and your cosmetic surgeon will discuss the areas of your body you'd like to change. You may undergo an examination to thoroughly assess your fat storage, skin elasticity and review your medical and health history. Your surgeon can discuss the placement of incisions and what other procedures may need to be performed to achieve the proper result. He or she will discuss what medication you should avoid, such as any that affect blood coagulation, and you may be asked to stop smoking for one to two weeks before and after surgery.

Although you'll be mobile immediately following your liposuction surgery, you will want to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and to help out around the house for a day or so.

The Surgery - How it is done?
Although an overwhelming majority are performed on an outpatient basis, some extensive liposuction procedures may require a brief hospital stay. Depending on the extent of your liposuction, your cosmetic surgeon may use a general anesthesia, where you will be fully-asleep during the surgery. Newer liposuction techniques involve injecting the area to be suctioned with a special fluid/anesthesia combination prior to suctioning. This is called tumescent liposuction. The fluid constricts the surrounding blood vessels, making the procedure nearly bloodless, while minimizing the pain. The rest of procedure is performed in the same way as traditional liposuction.

Liposuction begins as your surgeon makes small incisions, approximately one-half inch in length or less, near the area where fat is to be removed. A thin, hollow tube, called a cannula is inserted, and is attached to a machine or syringe that creates a strong vacuum. Your surgeon will then strategically manipulate the cannula under the skin to remove the unwanted fatty deposits.

Depending on the type of anesthesia, you may feel pressure, movement, or an occasional stinging sensation during the procedure, but not actual pain. Your surgeon will determine the amount of fat to remove by feeling and pinching the skin throughout the surgery.

What happens after your surgery?
Most patients are mobile immediately after liposuction, although an extra day or two of bed rest may be needed when large amounts of fat are removed. Keep in mind that healing is a gradual process. Your surgeon will want to begin normal activity as soon as possible to reduce post-operative complications, but in some cases you may be advised to avoid strenuous activity for a few weeks. Light exercise is usually permitted within a few days.

Your surgeon may recommend that a tight-fitting garment, similar to a girdle, be worn after surgery to reduce swelling. This may need to be worn for up to six weeks. Your stitches, however, will be removed within a week-and-a-half if they are not the type that dissolve.

You may not feel great just after your surgery. You've been given extra fluids during the procedure, and you'll likely experience swelling and some bruising, but this is only temporary. You may feel a little bruised and sore as if you'd overexercised that part of the body, but you should be able to resume work in a few days. Your doctor will recommend the exact timing, given your particular circumstances.

The new youRemember, liposuction is a surgical procedure, and your body has to heal before you see the full benefits. Your results will likely be visible within two or three weeks, but the full effect may not be fully evident for six months to a year after surgery in some cases.

You should maintain a balanced diet and exercise regularly to fully enjoy the new you for years to come. Many patients find that their liposuction is such a psychological boost that it gives them the incentive to exercise even more than before to improve other parts of their physique. With realistic expectations, most patients are pleased with the improvements from their liposuction procedure. The goal is for you to be more comfortable with your body and happy with your new shape.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a common surgical procedure performed to "pin back" or correct protruding ears. The surgery can be performed on adults as well as on children usually over five years of age. It is often recommended at an early age to help alleviate teasing at school by other children. Many parents are unaware of the severe psychological trauma that may result from such harassment.

How is it done?

Otoplasty is performed by making incisions in the back of the ears to expose the ear cartilage. It may be necessary to remodel or remove some cartilage before the ear is repositioned. Sutures are then used to maintain this correction. The exterior skin is sutured and the ears bandaged for several days to protect them in their new position. Sutures are generally removed within a few days, unless absorbable sutures are used.

This procedure can be performed in a hospital or outpatient surgical suite. Although general anesthesia may be recommended for young children, many patients also do well with a relaxing pre-medication and local anesthesia. Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss with you the type of anesthesia most suitable for this procedure.

What will be the after effects?

The improvement from surgery is readily apparent, although the final result will not be evident for several weeks due to swelling and other natural changes that are a result of healing.

Swelling and bruising are normal, but usually disappear within a week or so. Patients usually return to full activity by the end of two weeks, although it is necessary to protect the ears from trauma or bending until healing is more complete. For this reason, a headband will often be recommended for a period of time after the surgery.

Discomfort is mild and rarely is pain medication required.

What are the risks? The degree of improvement varies according to the individual problems, but most patients are pleased with the result of otoplasty. There can be risks in any surgical procedure. The overall effect is to produce a smoother, flatter tummy.

The best candidate for this surgery has relatively normal weight, weak muscles and excess skin. Patients who are considerably overweight are less ideal candidates for the operation and may be advised to lose weight prior to surgery. Age and skin tone have a lot to do with the level of improvement you may expect. During the consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will evaluate your particular condition and advise you as to whether you are a good candidate for this procedure.

How is it done?

The operation is carried out under general anesthesia and may be performed in a hospital or outpatient facility.

An incision is usually made across the lower abdomen and the skin is lifted upward toward the rib cage, saving the belly button by freeing it from the skin. The abdominal muscles are then tightened. The excess skin, which has been pulled down by the surgeon, is removed. The surgeon makes a small opening, creating a new navel where the old one had been. The incision is then sutured closed. Firm elastic dressings are applied. In certain cases, a less extensive operation may be possible.

Keeping you comfortableAlthough there will be some soreness and discomfort, your surgeon can prescribe medications to make you more comfortable. You should avoid strenuous activity for three to four weeks. Resumption of activities will be discussed with you by your cosmetic surgeon on an individual basis. Before your doctor discharges you, you will be advised to wear an appropriate abdominal support for several weeks.

What are the risks?

Abdominoplasty, though a major operation, is generally very satisfying. The scar across the lower abdomen is placed so that it is easily camouflaged. There are risks in any surgical procedure. You should discuss all the benefits and risks with your cosmetic surgeon, as the degree of improvement varies from patient to patient.

Mentoplasty

Many people have a chin that is too small for their face. When one has a lack of chin projection, the face is weakened. It can also make the nose look larger than it really is. For this reason, many patients will seek surgery to improve the appearance of the chin. This is accomplished by inserting a small synthetic implant over the natural bone. The operation can also greatly enhance the results of a facelift, since loss of chin projection may occur with aging. Chin augmentation is also commonly combined with facial liposuction, where fat is removed from under the chin and from the neck.
How is a Chin Augmentation Performed?
A small incision is made either underneath the chin or inside the mouth. A sterile implant, similar to the consistency of a natural chin, is placed in front of the bone to increase the projection of the chin. The implant is secured and the incision is sutured closed.

What is Cheekbone Augmentation?
High cheekbones have traditionally been a sign of beauty. Unfortunately, not everyone is born with that look. The procedure consists of placing a synthetic implant over the natural cheekbone. Implants come in a variety of sizes and shapes so that the cosmetic surgeon can select the proper one for each patient. Men also frequently seek this position to correct flatness in the mid face. As is the case with chin augmentation, the operation is frequently combined with other cosmetic procedures such as rhinoplasty or facelift. Additionally, it is frequently combined with chin augmentation.

How is a Cheekbone Augmentation Performed?
A small incision is made inside the mouth in the crease above the upper lip. A sterile implant, similar to the consistency of the natural cheekbone, is placed over the natural cheekbone to increase its projection. The implant is secured and the incision is sutured closed.

These procedures can be performed with either a local or general anesthetic, depending on the preferences of the surgeon and patient. The operations can be performed in the hospital or in an outpatient surgical suite.

How Will I Look After?
Some swelling and bruising can be expected and usually subsides within the first two weeks. A tape of elastic dressing may be recommended for a period of time. Mild discomfort is usually easily controlled with medications prescribed by your cosmetic surgeon.

After healing, the skin drapes smoothly over the implants. The implants themselves conform to the bone and are usually undetectable. The added projection of the chin should result in significant improvement which is especially apparent in the profile. The cheekbones can be expected to mimic natural high cheekbones.

What Are the Risks?
There are risks in any surgical procedure. In rare circumstances, an implant may have to be removed or changed due to unexpected problems. This can usually be done with little difficulty. Occasionally, there may be numbness from the surgery. You should discuss all the benefits and risks with your cosmetic surgeon.

Lipofilling

Fine lines around the mouth, deepening of the nasolabial lines and sagging of the skin over the cheek bones give the face a sad appearance and a tired look. Likewise, thin lips is a sign of hard appearance, whereas thick and full lips make the face softer and look younger.

Depressed scar give ugly appearance. These problems could be addressed by filling these structures with the fat harvested either from hips, buttocks or the abdomen so as to smooth out the deep furrows and produce the convexity of the face back for a younger look.

- This operation is done under local anesthesia as an office procedure and the
patient is discharged in 1 hour. Some time this procedure can be combined with other aesthetic procedure in general.

- There will usually be some edema and swelling over the area for 3-7 days more
but this is hardly a reason for the patient not to go work or carry on daily activities.

- In many cases, only one session of lipofilling may be sufficient to obtain the
desired final result. However, in those cases where large amounts of fat is
necessary for correction, sometimes a second or even third session may be necessary.

- Lipofilling is the most natural way of dealing with the contour problems
of the face. There are no side effects, no adverse reactions and most
important the result obtained is permanent.
